Beagles are generally very good with children. In fact they are the most recommended breed of dog for families with children under the age of ten. This is because beagles are extremely tolerant and patient with young children. Older children and Beagles make great companions as they both love to play and have boundless energy levels.
However tolerant a dog is, they do get irritated when they are handled roughly by children. Which is why more than beagle training, it is important that your child is taught how to interact with your pet. Pulling the dog’s tail, ears, nose, fur, sitting on the dog, putting a finger inside its nostrils and ears or sitting on the dog is something that children must be taught not to do.
This behavior hurts the dog and while they are patient most of the time, may snap once in a while. Which is only to be expected. So as long as you teach your child to be gentle, these dogs are usually very good with them.
If you want your dog to learn how to sit when you command him to do so then try getting a 6-foot lead and special treats for him. Now, head out to your yard of wherever both of you are comfortable and repeat saying “sit” while you pat his rear. This way you are saying and showing him what the word sit means and what he needs to do whenever you tell him to “sit”.
In about 30 minutes your dog will likely understand what you are tyring to teach him. Don’t forget to give him the sweet treat as a reward for doing right what you need him to do. Do this every single day for a week. Then surely he will be in a sitting position every time you say “sit”.
